About This Site

Dog Joint Health Reviews publishes first-person reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on the everyday products owners use with older, stiffer dogs: joint supplements, orthopedic beds, car ramps, lift harnesses and non-slip socks. Everything here comes from one owner's experience with her own senior dog and from reading labels and listings. It is not veterinary advice.

Senior Dog Safety

Nothing on this site is veterinary advice. Sudden limping, a dog that cannot stand, crying out when moved, or swelling in a joint needs a veterinarian promptly, not a product. Talk with your veterinarian before starting any supplement, especially if your dog takes medication or has a diagnosed condition, and follow the label for serving amounts.

Check the weight and size limits on every bed, ramp and harness against your own dog. Keep a ramp on firm, level ground, make sure it is latched, wipe it dry, and stay beside your dog on it. A wet or icy ramp can slip. Do not try to lift a heavy dog alone: you can hurt your back and drop the dog.

Take grip socks off overnight and check the paws daily, since a sock that is too tight can restrict circulation and a loose one can be chewed or swallowed. Check under a lift harness for rubbing, and replace any bed foam or cover your dog has started to chew.
